Do you have a lot of digital pictures? My life is almost completely digital now, and sometimes i want to show the digital pictures that i've been snapping to friends or family. Sure, i've got tivo's home media option, but what if i just wanted to have my pictures shown off in a photo frame? The smartparts digital photo frame (sdpf) is the answer i've been looking for. The device is a 3.5″ tft display that is not only capable of showing the pictures directly from a digital camera's media card, but can also be used as a memory card reader/writer and can even hook into your television for both ntsc and pal viewing of your digital pictures. In order to use the sdpf you simply plug it into the wall and then plug in either a cf or sd/mmc card from your digital camera. Moments later the photo frame starts cycling through the pictures on the card.

In addition to working as a digital media viewer, the sdpf supports the ability to plug into a television. This is a great feature if you want to show the pictures that you've been snapping to friends and family on the big screen. Modes the smartparts digital photo frame is designed to sit on a desk and showcase your digital pictures. To that end, it features the ability to view one picture (still picture mode) or an entire slide show, which can be configured for three seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, or one minute on each picture. You can also delete pictures, rotate pictures, and even adjust the brightness of the screen. Important information. you can view any resolution picture, but the device works best with 320×240.

It can handle a larger resolution image, but it takes longer to display each picture. jpeg files need to be stored in the dcim100media folder on your memory card in order for them to show up on the spdpf. Most digital cameras store images in that folder, but if your pictures don't show up on the frame this may be the reason. Also, you have to name the jpeg files a certain way: xxxxyyyy, where x is only letters and numbers and y is only digits. Summary overall, the sdpf's screen is a bit small and the contrast is a bit off, but for the price it's a nice gadget to have on your desk for viewing your favorite pictures.

In addition, the fact that you can use it as a memory card reader/writer and also as a portable digital picture viewer on a television make it a great deal. Saw it on the shelf for $49 and couldn't pass it up. Haven't had too much time to play with it yet however i have had a few pictures that won't display on it. If i am reading the manual(slip of paper) properly, it wants the files names in 8.3 format.

In other words 8 character names with a.jpg extension (no more, no less). I'm going to go back later and rename all of the photos to meet that requirement and see what happens. – by 0v3rk1ll file format update (6:25am est thu sep 02 2004) ok, here's the scoop. I couldn't get the dpf to display anything that i had run through photoshop no matter what settings i used. I called radio shack tech support and rex said that they were familiar with the issue and no files saved with photoshop will display no matter what. He recommended ms paint but that is way too tedious for batches of photos so i tried firehand ember and voila, it worked.

So apparantly after you edit you pics, just save them as.jpg in another editor besides photoshop and you should be ok. Firehand ember does batch resizing and resaving so it'll work for me.

$50 is a pretty good price for one of these gadgets. Not a bad holiday gift for the grandparents. Does anybody know how much built-in flash memory these things have? It has no internal flash memory. You must have a card in it for it to function. Also, as discovered by ov3rk1ll, it only reads jpeg files that use standard huffman tables (per jpeg standard section k.3). A lot of software out there (photoshop, irfanview, imagemagick) save jpegs with huffman tables which are optimized to the particular image. While this results in better compression for the same image quality, it's incompatible with the radioshack viewer. I found this nice (free) utility, though, to take care of jpeg incompatibilities: (see second entry, rsdpv.exe).

Pacific digital makes a 5×7 version, but the lowest online price i could find was $220. Still way too high. Should be about half the price. Maybe the radio shack move is a sign of a price drop for these other manufacturers.

– by tigerjuju after reviewing this last night (1:55pm est fri oct 01 2004) here is my verdict after testing it for 4 hours last night. The lcd quality of this frame is not the best, but still more than acceptable for me (remember this guy only cost me $30).

The viewing angle is limited. It shouldn't matter as much in reality b/c the frame size is small and most likely you will be sitting close in front of the frame to look the the photos any way. I have one dead pixel on the unit i bought, but i should be able to exchange for a good one easily at the store later on. Image quality on tv out is horrible to a point i would say don't even bother using it. I have tried with both hi/low resolution photo and hd/regular tv. They all looked really bad. Must be a problem caused by the image conversion for tv out.

You must name the jpeg files with the correct naming pattern and put them in the correct folder(s) for it to work. Files has to have names with 4 letters followed by 4 numbers. I am not sure if you can have less letters/numbers, but definitely not more. Free dhcp server.

And the files must be placed in folders “dcim/100media” (or something like that), and you can increment the 3 digit number and put photos in different folders. The frame shows the photos by the order of the names of folders and files.

It makes no sense to me why the images have to loaded to the flash memory cards in such specific way (other than the developer got lazy and don't bother putting a bit more effort to write more usable code). But it's not something i cannot get over. The “rsdpv.exe” program mentioned in my posting about works really well for this frame. But if you care about the order your photos are displayed, you might want to fix file names first before you run “rsdpv.exe”. I used freeware file renamer basic.

Of course one cannot expect to buy the lowest version and expect it to handle a complicated home business properly but, then again, someone who has only made, say, $1,000, from a hobby business over the year should not be expected to buy Home and Business. However, user backlash was severe and Turbo Tax has pledged not to repeat this ploy. Deluxe or Premier should work quite well for them. Turbotax 2015 for mac download.

The usb 1.1 connection is a bit slow, but otherwise it was recognized as a removable storage device by windows xp with out any driver installation and it works fine just like any other usb flash card reader/writers. One funny thing i notice is if you yank the power of without using the power button, a residual image of the last photo you see and it stays on screen even without the power (with no back light). Not sure if it will cause damage to the screen after a while, but best advise is to use the power button to turn it off. In my opinion, this frame works best as a desktop picture frame since it has small screen and requires to be connect to a power outlet. It doesn't take batteries so i don't see why people would think this is good for travel and see photos on the road, especially you can already see them with your digital camera. The screen on this frame is only a bit larger and is not worth the trouble of carrying it in addition to the camera.

I am a bit disappointed that it doesn't work well with tv-out since it's one of the big draws for me, but i am okay with it since i am still fairly happy with it just as a desktop frame. It definitely does not warrent it's original price of $129. You could consider at $50, and i think it's a good buy at $30 and i plan on getting more for my folks.

This is my 2nd unit (exchanged first one, couldn't get it to work) now the 2nd unit, following the advice above, have used resize.exe to resize them, saves as new.jpg, saved files as aaaa0001.jpg and aaaa0002.jpg, place files in the dcim folder, still get a blank screen. These photos were originally shot on my canon digital rebel, which saves as jpg, and using the sizer program, it knocks them down in size quite a bit. You probably know this by now if you still have the viewer, but your issue is that the files are not the right format for the viewer (bright white blank screen).

Take them into ms paint and save them out from there (according to the instruction sheet). It is very finicky about the format of the picture. About anything that has been touched by an editing program will not work. The exceptions that i have found are the rsdpv mentioned earlier in this thread and photostudio are the only 2 i've found to fix the files to appease the device.

Both of these are free utilities thanks to the authors. Both will do batch operations to help speed the process. Just got my device about a week ago and have been having “a lot of fun” with it since. Think i finally have it where i consider it usable. Side benefit to photostudio is that it seems to drop the size of the jpg's and makes the load a lot quicker!

The other 5 i bought for x-mas gifts. The first 2 i unpacked and tried to load (using ms paint) both died within minutes of operation! They would not turn on! I am taking them all back!

I bought one from radio shack for $49 and it powered up but wouldn't shut off or show pics using a cf. I unplugged it to shut it off and then plugged the adapter back in and it would not power on. I returned it for a new one and the same thing happened. Do not buy the radio shack one.

Deal, and have found that the firmware onboard the viewer only accepts image files that have a lower case.jpg extension. After playing with all sorts of solutions, i was able to use my nikon to shoot, plug in the usb to use it as a card reader, and rename the default “.jpg” file extensions to “.jpg” and they view fine.

320×240 is acceptable on my 27 in tv. Yes i see some small jpeg artifacts, but i am satisfied. This would have been a ripoff at $120 because of poor software design, but at what i paid i am satisfied.

I just purchased a smartparts digital photo frame as a birthday gift for my photographer husband. I paid a reasonable price, and read many reviews beforehand, including this thread. Thank you to all who posted helpful comments and suggestions, especially to “grover” for the link. Not only does this tool easily resize the photos, but (bonus!) names them appropriately too. (i would have been lost if knowledge of photoshop was required.) unlike the previous lady who bought this item as a gift, my husband will receive it next week fully functional, and with a media card preloaded with some of his favourite pics!

I can down load pics off the cp on to the sd card but nothing shows up on the screen while i'm hooked up to the cp i get a green screen with letters msdc when i unplug the cp i get a white screen when i take the card out i get radio shack i know i'm downloading to the sd card i can print off the card in my epson picture mate. I think i might have a broke dpv zi down loaded the free ware and it wooks great but it still will not show my pics.
